How to Avoid Common Pug Dog Health Problems
Before purchasing a Pug, the entire family should familiarize itself with the type of special Pug dog health that the breed requires. First recognized in 1885 by the AKC Toy group, the breed has had a long history of interacting with man, one that goes back thousands of years. Curly tails, thickset bodies, and flat wrinkly face are all distinguishable traits of a Pug. On average, the breed is 13 pounds at the lightest, or 20 pounds at the heaviest, and stands 10 to 14 inches in height. Certainly, the breed has its own unique charm, but it is a type of dog that can develop many health problems that only their breed can catch, and special pet care must be taken to assure this doesn’t happen.
First, there is the dog’s wrinkly skin and unfortunately, your pug’s adorable skin folds are prone to infection - you must consult your veterinarian immediately at the first signs of infection. These skin infections are easy to prevent by regular washing, to remove any excess dirt between the folds.
Another area of Pug dog health that can be a concern is the eyes. A Pug’s face is generally the cause of many eyesight problems, caused by the special shape and location of that part of the body. Look for any inflammation in the eye regularly and take the dog to the Vet immediately if you identify any problem in the surrounding area.
Eating too much food is a problem which plagues many Pugs. A Pug therefore needs to have its food carefully managed so that they do not overeat, as that can be detrimental to them in the same way that it can be for humans. Heat can bother a Pug a lot, so shade is very important to any Pug left outside, and they should never be left in a car during the summer. Periods of intense heat in general will cause difficulty breathing, so make sure you do not leave the breed exposed to high heat.
Like with any dog, proper care and vet visits are the keys to pug dog health. Taking decent care of your pet is something that does not require a lot of effort, and it can cause years worth of healthiness and happiness for your pet and you.
